Six Sizzling Summer Job Search Tips

Six Sizzling Summer Job Search Tips

Kim Isaacs | Monster Resume Expert

Are you taking a break from the job search and surrendering to the lazy days of summer? The conventional wisdom is that almost everyone is in vacation mode from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Consequently, many postpone job searching until September.

Is this a mistake? Could you be missing opportunities if you take the summer off? We asked the career experts to find out.

Summer Job Searching — Worthwhile or Waste of Time?

“I often hear job seekers say that they want to take the summer off,” says Wendy Terwelp, career coach and president of Mequon, Wisconsin-based career management firm Opportunity Knocks. Terwelp says that by the time the summer ends, job seekers who took the summer off will be competing against even more job seekers who have followed the same strategy.

Anne-Marie Ditta, president of MyCareerCoach.net, agrees. “A fair number of job seekers think that recruiters and hiring managers are unavailable during the summer,” Ditta says. Therefore, many believe it’s a waste of time to job search from June through August.

I really do not feel the tips in this article helped at all. I see their point but they just feel too hopeful. First, what if your neighborhood is just dead, and the neighbors are never around or never come out outside? I will not knock on the doors and ask if I can help them with yard work. Next, what if all my friends do not live in the same town? I cannot form a group with just me in it? Furthermore, you say "take a couple of classes" but they cost $. Lastly, I am reading this article in July, middle of summer. To my knowledge, people start looking for a summer job in March. I do not mean to sound all whiny and like a jerk. I just cannot put these tips to use. The hardest thing for me is to even get a call back for a phone interview, let alone face to face interview. Who will want to talk to me at a barbecue? Honestly, who? Especially if they see me for the first time. Yes, networking is key to getting a job. I get it. But if no one shows interest in me when I apply or send an e-mail just floating my name, how am I supposed to reach them at a barbecue where trying to talk to me, job applicant, is the last thing anyone wants to do?
