6. How Would Your Co-Workers Describe You?

Why It’s Stupid: You’re obviously not privy to your co-workers inner thoughts and feelings. And even if you do know how they feel, of course you’re going to pad the truth to make yourself sound better. In most cases, the interviewer will never speak to most of your co-workers, so what‚s the harm in embellishing?

What It Really Means: The interviewer isn’t interested in your little white lies, they are trying to see how you think others view you. Even if you are stretching the truth, your answer will give the interviewer an idea of how you view yourself and what you believe are your most important attributes. Considering you are discussing how others view you, it can also be a modesty test, separating those who are embarrassed about themselves from those who won’t shut up.

    So long as they don't do that infantile "why did you take the pen from me" thing, I'm willing to put up with a fairly high level of idiocy when it comes to job interview questions.

    My sister on the other hand... she got asked which character from Friends she would be. She had never seen it (still hasn't), told the interviewer so and then asked how the question was relevant to the position she was applying for. She didn't get it, obviously, but after being asked that question, she didn't want it. It was jobs.com/">graduate jobs she was applying for. A certain level of intelligence was expected from her and she expected a certain level of intelligence from her interviewer.

    I wouldn't necessarily recommend mouthing off to your interviewer the way she did but if you get a question like that, chances are you don't want to work for that company.

    These questions can get some strange answers. As an Interviewer I no longer ask, "where do you see yourself in 5 years?" One applicant replied, doing your job, of course. Then there was, "tell me a little about yourself." Well, he started with being born, literally! Even in my own interviews, if I am asked about weaknesses, my response is, "how will that make me look beside someone who is perfect." Anyhow, when these questions come up and I am sure they will again, I use them as an opportunity to inject a moment of levity into an otherwise stressful interaction.

    I say review my resume, check references and make a damn decision. Don't have me meet with 5 people, spend 2 hours and then send me a letter in the mail saying; we wish you all the best but we've decided to go with someone else.

    I for one thing avoid these idiotic questions when I interview because people are trained for these answers. I like real responses from random laid back questions whether they come out right or not to see how applicants handle themselves.

    Interviewers have their right to ask questions, that seem to be important. It closes the great viod, of not anything about someone to knowing something. The real purpose of the interview.
    I think a lot of the questions could be answered by just noticing the interviewee and the fact that, " Hey, this guy wants a job "
    I think if future employers took us seriously, we would ALL be working !

    very good article. Interviewers definitely ask these questions and more. Thanks for providing it for us in this day in age it is hard to read the interviewer and sometime the interviewer is not even the person that you are going to work with.
