Posted 21 days ago I am a new user to Linux thanks to a new job. They want me to learn about Linux. One question I really want to know the answer to is what is the difference between Ubuntu and Kubuntu, and because of a particular project they have me working on, I have seen a lot of mention of something called KDE, what is that? |

| Posted 7 days ago The difference between Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and for that matter, Xubuntu is the windows manager that they use, and also, the programs that they come with pre-installed. Ubuntu uses GNOME, Kubuntu uses KDE, and Xubuntu uses Xfce. Before I go further, I should explain window manager first. A windows manager is an environment that configures how your desktop looks, behaves, organizes, and so forth. The three managers I mentioned above also comes with programs pre-installed, so they count as a desktop environment. The KDE window manager, for example, comes with Kopete as an IM client, Konqueror as the Web Browser, and KDevelop as a software development environment. If you've noticed, they all start with the letter 'K', a pun on KDE. But enough of that jargon. The best way to describe the differences between Ubuntu and Kubuntu is by their screenshots. EDIT: hmm, the photos are gone. But you can always check out some websites that has screenshots! If you're coming from WIndows, I suggest trying Kubuntu first. It's a smoother transition. If you come from a Mac, try Ubuntu. |
