A University of Buffalo student has voluntarily left a cabin he had been building on the Amherst, N.Y., campus since May, a school official says.

Vice President for Student Affairs Dennis Black said in a statement that Brian Borncamp left his camp site on the edge of the university’s north campus. The 21-year-old has been using his limited funds to build his 8-by-10-foot cabin after being unable to pay both his tuition and rent, The Buffalo (N.Y.) News reported Tuesday.

While Borncamp’s cabin was nearly 80 percent complete as of last Saturday, university officials informed the philosophy and computer science major he had until Monday to vacate the small cabin.

“Temporary housing was offered for his transition. With student consent, the university is removing the structure and restoring the site to its natural condition,” Black said.

Borncamp rejected university officials’ offers of counseling or an on-campus job to aid in his residential efforts, the News reported.
