7 Office Offenders (And How To Regulate)

The Phenom

She puts the D in Diva

The Culprit: There’s nothing worse than a talent who uses her ability as a weapon. She’s notorious for producing at the last minute and sees herself as the office’s ace in the hole. Rightly so. She continuously cranks out reports with little or no effort, is the most intelligent on the team, and has a commanding presence in meetings. She’s energetic, positive, and always willing to help (when she’s around). Her disarming charm makes it difficult for team members to chastise her in public. Unfortunately, she takes advantage of her position and pushes office etiquette to the limit. Her seniority and track record make her feel entitled and untouchable, giving her a wide berth to mistreat the team.

The Cure: How do you discipline her without risking her walking out? Spare the rod, spoil the child. If you’ve let her behavior slide this long, she may not be keen on criticism. Sure, she’s your clutch player, but while she’s resting on her laurels, who’s pulling double duty? Don’t let your team feel you’re playing favorites, or worse yet, think you’re intimidated by peak performers. Start rewarding hardworking employees with better projects. Demand she share the spotlight by publicly praising the B-team.
