Be creative where you apply

I got my current position though this very route. I e-mailed the head of a Denver sports radio station completely out of the blue, asking him if he had any available positions. Sure enough, he invited me for an interview a few weeks later. That very interview led to my current job.

This is absolutely a great way into an organization. It shows the employer interest in their company as well as strong initiative on your part. It’s just as good as straight-up applying for a job and has the advantage that it doesn’t put you in a crowded field of other candidates.
